Follow the steps below to file for your MC Authority with the FMCSA by yourself

The next 9 pages are notices and information. Read through and click next.

Create a password & security questions. Be sure to write down your application ID & password. You'll need them later.

Select "Company Contact" in the first box. Enter your name & address. Pro tip: make sure this is the billing address for the payment (credit/debit card) you'll use later.

Pro tip: use a "burner" phone number and email address. If you don't have one, reach out and we'll send you one. PLEASE don't use a random number - most applicants receive over 100 phone calls and dozens of emails after they file.

You may already have this, if not just keep going - it's not required. You can register one later and they're free to get. The number is used for credit reporting with your business.

Make sure to enter this EXACTLY the same as it's written on your articles of incorporation. Commas, periods, and spelling should ALL match. If you're filing as a sole proprietorship, we strongly recommend pausing here to file an LLC for liability reasons.

If you filed a DBA on your articles, enter it here. If you haven't filed a DBA, leave this blank.

Select yes unless you don't receive mail to your business address.

Use your EIN (Federal Tax ID) if you have one. We recommend getting an EIN - it's free and saves you from giving our your SSN. You can proceed with a SSN but you'll need to update with an EIN once you receive one.

"Property" represents most regular, general freight hauling. Look into the FMCSA freight classifications if yo're unsure.

Only mark yes if you are transporting passengers. This will significantly increase your insurance.

Mark "No", unless you are planning to broker freight immediately. This costs an extra $300.

Mark "No" if you are planning be a carrier or freight broker - consult an exporting authority before selection the freight forwarder option. This can also cost an additional $300.

If you're operating an LLC, put 0 unless you have vehicles in addition to your hauling equipment (commercial vehicle & trailers are next question).

If you're operating as a sole proprietorship, you must enter your personal vehicles.

Next 4 pages are your number of vehicles. Select how many FROM THE START - you can add more later, don't add what you don't have now.

Click next - next 5 pages are numbers of drivers. Select only the number you have now (don't add what you don't have yet)

This number should be $750,000 for a 1 truck setup (will be higher for passenger/hazmat/other setups). Click next to proceed.

Next 13 pages - Applicant affiliation and compliance questions. Agree and click next.

Enter the password you created at the beginning of the application.

Next 4 pages - Compliance information review and sign oath that information entered is accurate.

Next 9 pages - Portal setup. Enter information and complete each page then click next.

Next 2 pages - Payment notice. This should cost $300 if you're just getting MC/DOT number (no refunds)
